This acreage was first seen from the cockpit of a private plane piloted by Paul Anderson from Miami Florida. In the passenger seat was his wife Mary, who saw the potential for this mountain. Mary was a hotel owner who had a fortune left by her first husband; Paul was the center for the Chicago Bears. The football team held their training camp in Miami at that time and Paul met Mary when he stayed at the hotel. They married and Paul, who loved to fly, took Mary on many excursions in his plane.
They purchased the entire area for development; the name of the subdivision is Paul Anderson Subdivision Broad River. The story is clear, however, that it should have been named for Mary. Not only did she have the vision for the development, she was the task master, supervisor and all around working hand on the project. Others who worked on clearing the roads said she worked them into the ground. It was Mary who laid out the road plan and then set about making it happen.
In November, 1985, eleven property owners signed an agreement to “maintain equally and on a pro-rata basis the said private road in good condition with proper ditching and draining on both sides of the road, adequate gravel or pavement, sufficient to keep the road in stable condition, free of ruts and potholes, sufficient to allow passage by any type of motor vehicle over and across said road and to and from each of the lots or parcels of real property owned by the parties having executed this instrument." They also agreed that they were "vitally concerned in keeping and maintaining the said private road in a neat and attractive condition, and will comply with this agreement whenever such road needs any maintenance or upkeep."
This is the Lakey Gap Acres Road Fund agreement that establishes the fund.
The original concept for the development was that it would be for summer homes. In the beginning (the sixties) there were 3 homes with year-round residents. When the Road Fund was created in 1984 those who were living here year round agreed informally that they would take care of the road for themselves in the winter and the road fund monies would be for summer maintenance.
By 2008 we had 13 residences that are year-round, 5 that are occupied 5-6 months of the year, and that are used on occasional basis throughout the year. Increased traffic on this road included commercial vehicles that include gas/oil delivery, electric meter readers, termite inspectors, package delivery, repair and remodel, tree maintenance, power repair, furniture and appliance delivery. While much of this traffic is for access to all homes on the road, the members agreed that there needs to be year-round maintenance to keep the road open for year round use and emergency vehicle access.
Today, there are approximately 20 homes that use Lakey Gap Acres for access, only nine are occupied full-time and the rest are small, summer mountain cabins. Through voluntary annual dues, the Lakey Gap Acres Road Fund is able to perform yearly maintenance to maintain the quality of the road. However, these dues only cover the cost of routine maintenance and never accrue to any type of nest-egg.
With your help, we can maintain the quality, safety and accessibility of our small community.

While there has been much destruction, there has also been an incredible outpouring of help from all over the country. We are so very grateful to the state and federal agencies and many volunteers who have brought abundant support and assistance to our area. We hold those who have experienced terrible losses close to our hearts. In all of this, we have been enjoying a newfound sense of our Lakey Gap Acres community. This disaster has brought us all together, giving us the opportunity to connect and work together.
We deeply appreciate any and all support.
